Blackpool freezes parking fees to help local economy

Blackpool Council has decided to freeze parking fees for the upcoming financial year to safeguard the local economy. This means on-street parking rates in the town center, unchanged since 2022, will stay at £1.50 for an hour and £3 for up to 90 minutes. Fees at key multi-storey car parks—Talbot Road, West Street, and Central—along with surface lots like Banks Street and Central, will also hold steady from April.

Coun Paula Burdess, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Street Scene and Neighbourhoods, explained, “We’re keenly aware that raising charges for council-owned car parks, residential permits, or trade permits could hurt local businesses, residents, and tourism right now. So, we’re keeping these fees frozen for the next financial year. Many of our car park rates haven’t gone up in years. Despite rising costs to run and maintain these facilities, we’re committed to keeping prices reasonable. We hope this supports everyone who lives, works, or runs a business in Blackpool.”

Last year, some fees did rise, including at Talbot Road and West Street multi-storey car parks, to align them with Central Car Park’s rates. A September council report noted a £150,000 boost in parking revenue compared to the prior year, partly due to those adjustments. High-profile events like Christmas-by-the-Sea, Blackpool Air Show, and the World Fireworks Championships drove income, though a dip of about 26,000 visitors between April and August 2024—linked to poor weather—slowed momentum compared to 2023.

This week, the council also announced a £100,000 investment to modernize the payment system at Talbot Road’s multi-storey car park, replacing an outdated chip coin setup.
