Farming may not be in her family tree, but it’s firmly rooted in her ambitions. Katie Burgoine, a student at Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College, has clinched a £500 Cornish Mutual Young Farmer Further Education Bursary to fuel her agricultural journey.
Hailing from a non-farming background, Katie is carving her own path in the industry. She’s pursuing a Level 3 Agriculture T-Level in Livestock Production and impressed bursary judges with her dedication to breaking into the field.
Her love for farming sparked while working as a veterinary care assistant and raising her own chicks. “I’m thrilled by the idea of working hard no matter the weather or day,” Katie said. “Every day offers fresh tasks and challenges—you never know what’s coming next.”
The bursary will help her take driving lessons, opening doors to local farms for hands-on experience. “I also want to earn my AI or foot trimming certification to boost my employability and broaden my skills,” she added.
This year, Cornish Mutual’s Young Farmer Bursaries saw a record-breaking number of applicants. The initiative, led by the South West-based farming insurance provider, awards four £500 Further Education Bursaries and two £750 Higher Education Bursaries to nurture the region’s budding agricultural talent.
Kate Barfoot, agriculture course manager at Weymouth and Kingston Maurward College, said, “These bursaries are a game-changer for students, letting them showcase their abilities. The funding for extra training can kickstart their careers and make them stand out to employers.”
Applicants had to articulate ‘Why I am studying agriculture,’ with entries reviewed by a panel including Cornish Mutual CEO Peter Beaumont. He noted, “Backing the next wave of farmers is vital for the South West’s agricultural future, and our bursaries are part of that mission. Katie’s enthusiasm and drive to carve her niche in the industry really shine through.”
