The River Cam footbridge to be closed for repairs lasting three weeks

Cambridge, UK – The Jesus Green footbridge, a key pedestrian crossing over the River Cam, will undergo repairs starting February 24, Cambridgeshire County Council has announced. The closure, scheduled to last until March 16, will allow crews to replace the bridge’s decking. Work will take place weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., during which time the footbridge will be fully closed to all users.

A diversion route will be implemented to guide pedestrians during the closure hours, the council confirmed. “Jesus Green Footbridge, Cambridge Footpath 81, will be closed to all users from the 24th Feb – 16th March between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for replacement decking,” a Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson stated. “A diversion route will be in place to assist those affected.”

This isn’t the first time the footbridge has faced closure. In May 2024, it was shut for two days after safety concerns arose regarding the lock islands. Following emergency works and a structural inspection, it reopened to the public. The upcoming repairs aim to ensure the bridge remains safe and functional for the long term.

Local residents and commuters are advised to plan alternative routes during the repair period. Further details on the diversion route will be provided closer to the start date.
