Suspected grenades removed following Weston-super-Mare Town Hall evacuation

Weston-super-Mare Town Hall was evacuated earlier today (Tuesday, February 20) after two suspected historic grenades were discovered in a bag brought to the police enquiry desk for disposal. The individual had intended to surrender a collection of knives and suspected ammunition, but a search of the bag revealed the potentially explosive devices, prompting immediate action.

The building, which houses Weston Central Library and North Somerset Council offices, was swiftly evacuated, with staff and visitors relocated to a respite centre established at the Tropicana. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was summoned to handle the situation.

In a statement released just before 4pm, a North Somerset Council spokesperson confirmed that the EOD team had safely removed the devices, allowing staff to return to the Town Hall. The building is set to reopen to the public tomorrow morning. The spokesperson expressed gratitude to Avon and Somerset Police, the EOD team, and council staff for their quick and effective response in ensuring everyone’s safety.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson added that the EOD team had taken the suspected grenades away, and police have since left the scene.
