A major step forward has been taken in a multi-million-pound regeneration project that would see a row of shops and flats on Filwood Broadway demolished and replaced. Revised plans for the west side of the street have been submitted to council planning officers, with construction potentially starting this year if approved.
The proposal involves tearing down buildings numbered 4 to 16 on Filwood Broadway—a curved stretch of shop units with flats above—opposite the play space and community centre. The site, part of a broader redevelopment effort, sits near an area already being transformed into a larger residential project on the former location of a 1930s art deco cinema.
In place of the existing structures, the plan envisions a modern row of shops and business units topped with 18 flats, all classified as “affordable” under planning guidelines. These homes will feature cutting-edge eco-friendly elements, including solar panels and heat pumps, built to the latest standards.
Initially submitted in November, the scheme is a key piece of the Filwood Broadway regeneration project, which secured £14 million from the Government’s Levelling Up fund in 2023. This funding is also supporting a full overhaul of the community centre and other local improvements. While the Bristol Civic Society broadly backs the concept, it raised a single objection regarding the flats’ internal layout—the only formal criticism so far.
This week, the council’s housing department, which is spearheading the effort, provided updated documents detailing upgrades to water, sewage, and drainage systems, solar panel designs, and a refreshed vision for the building’s frontage. The proposal is slated for review by the planning committee in the coming weeks, paving the way for work to begin this year if given the green light.
