Operation aimed at specific vehicles finds 194 road related offences

A recent police operation in Teesside focused on commercial vehicles, revealing a total of 194 road-related offenses. Cleveland Police participated in a two-week national campaign from January 27 to February 9, aiming to enhance road safety and enforce compliance among commercial drivers.

During this operation, officers stopped and inspected 293 vehicles, including 81 transporting hazardous materials. These checks were conducted to ensure proper documentation, vehicle maintenance, and driver responsibility.

Key Offenses Identified

Police discovered various violations, ranging from uninsured drivers to severe safety concerns. Below are some of the major offenses recorded:

  • 21 vehicles had no insurance
  • 5 drivers were operating without a valid license
  • 15 motorists were caught driving carelessly
  • 9 drivers were disqualified but still on the road
  • 8 drivers failed to wear seatbelts
  • 26 drivers were under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • 26 vehicles were carrying insecure loads
  • 8 vehicles had faulty brakes

These violations pose serious risks, particularly for vehicles carrying dangerous goods and chemicals, which require strict safety regulations to prevent accidents.

Police Emphasize Road Safety Importance

Inspector Dave Ridgway, Matrix lead on road safety, highlighted the necessity of such operations. He explained that Cleveland’s road network serves as a major transport route for commercial vehicles, including those carrying hazardous materials across the UK and internationally.

“With so many motorists on our roads, it is our duty to help keep people safe and participate in any national initiatives which can assist in reducing the number of those killed or seriously injured in collisions on our roads,” he stated.

Enhancing Road Safety Measures

The findings from this operation reinforce the need for regular vehicle inspections and stricter enforcement of road safety laws. By addressing these violations, Cleveland Police aims to reduce fatal or serious accidents and ensure commercial vehicles meet safety standards before hitting the roads.

Ensuring compliance with licensing, insurance, and vehicle maintenance is crucial for preventing accidents and safeguarding all road users. These enforcement efforts are expected to continue, with further crackdowns planned to maintain high safety standards on Teesside’s roads.
