Man dragged ex from her bedroom then slashed her ankles

A 37-year-old man, David Ziga, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a vicious, unprovoked assault on his ex-partner in Millfield, Peterborough. The attack, which took place in the early hours of August 24, left the victim with severe, life-changing injuries.

Ziga, formerly of Sewell Road, Bradford, West Yorkshire, let himself into the woman’s flat around 12:30 a.m. and dragged her from her bedroom. He then punched her repeatedly before smashing a glass and using it to slash the back of her ankles, severing nerves and tendons. The victim lost a significant amount of blood and later told police she feared for her life during the ordeal.

In a desperate bid to survive, the woman fabricated a story about a group of masked men attacking her, hoping it would convince Ziga to leave. She then called the ambulance service for urgent help, claiming the false story as a ploy to get him out of her home. When police arrived, Ziga was arrested with the victim’s blood still on his hands.

During the attack, Ziga reportedly threatened to put the woman “in a wheelchair” because she had “put him in prison.” This came after he spent seven months on remand for prior domestic abuse allegations, which were later dropped, leading to his release before this incident.

Appearing at Woolwich Crown Court on February 14, Ziga pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. He was sentenced to serve at least seven years in prison, with the remaining three years to be served on licence in the community under strict conditions. Additionally, a 12-year restraining order was imposed, barring him from contacting the victim.

Detective Constable Katie Orme, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s courage, stating, “The victim’s quick thinking likely saved her life. Ziga is an incredibly dangerous individual, and this sentence reflects the severity of his actions. I commend her bravery in supporting this investigation.”

The case has highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence, with authorities emphasizing the importance of protecting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable.
