Former Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher has opened up about his new life as a farmer in the Peak District, sharing both the challenges and rewards of his rural lifestyle. The 41-year-old, now starring in Fletcher’s Family Farm, also spoke about his marriage to Elizabeth Marsland and reflected on his long-running acting career.
Farm Life Struggles: Panic Over Snow and Animal Care
Kelvin, who runs a 120-acre farm in Wincle, revealed that harsh weather conditions have been a major source of stress. Speaking on the Who We Are Now podcast with Izzy and Richard Hammond, he admitted feeling panicked about his animals during a recent snowfall.
“I’ve just had a message, there’s quite a bit of snow at home and I’ve already been panicking because I moved the cows into a different field. The sheep have no hay, and I was really worried.”
Fortunately, a helpful neighbour stepped in to provide hay for the sheep, highlighting the community spirit that often defines rural life.
Marriage with Elizabeth Marsland: Opposites Attract?
Kelvin also shared insights into his relationship with his wife, Elizabeth Marsland, whom he has known since they were both eight years old. He described their relationship as one of opposites, saying:
“We’re very different, if something’s red, Liz will say it’s blue, but that’s just the way we are. Maybe that’s why we’re compatible.”
However, in a humorous moment, he retracted his words, joking:
“No actually, like most other married couples, you still don’t understand the other person, do you?”
Despite their differences, the couple has built a life together, balancing family, farm life, and television work.
Kelvin’s Acting Journey: From Emmerdale to Strictly Winner
Kelvin’s career began in 1994 with a role in the ITV crime drama Cracker. He went on to appear in several TV shows, including Chiller and Coronation Street.
However, he became a household name in 1996 when he took on the role of Andy Sugden in Emmerdale, a character he played for two decades before leaving in 2016.
In 2019, Kelvin made a surprising career move when he competed on Strictly Come Dancing. Despite joining the show as a last-minute replacement, he went on to win the competition alongside professional dancer Oti Mabuse.
From TV to Farming: The Making of Fletcher’s Family Farm
After leaving acting, Kelvin and his family decided to embrace farming life. Their journey is documented in the ITV series Fletcher’s Family Farm, offering viewers a realistic glimpse into the highs and lows of farm life.
The series follows the family’s daily struggles, from weather challenges to animal care, all set against the beautiful yet demanding landscape of the Peak District.
Kelvin Fletcher has successfully transitioned from soap star to farmer, tackling the unpredictable realities of rural life while maintaining his presence in the entertainment industry. With his strong family bond and passion for farming, Kelvin’s story continues to captivate audiences, proving that change—even from TV studios to muddy fields—can be a rewarding adventure.
