A waste disposal firm owner has been fined £3,800 and lost his van after illegally dumping rubbish in a residential street. George Titterington, who ran G&G Rubbish Removals and formerly traded as The Garbage Guys Blackburn, was paid for a house clearance but instead fly-tipped the waste on Mowbray Avenue, Blackburn.
Illegal Dumping Leads to Criminal Conviction
The Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council launched an investigation after discovering the dumped waste. They found that the homeowner who hired Titterington had carried out proper checks, ensuring the company had a valid waste disposal license and obtaining a receipt.
As a result, the homeowner faced no penalties, but Titterington was prosecuted. The council seized his vehicle, pursued criminal proceedings, and successfully convicted him of fly-tipping.
Council’s Statement on the Conviction
In a Facebook post, the council confirmed the outcome:
“Back in April last year, George Titterington, trading as ‘G&G Rubbish Removals’ at the time, formerly known as ‘The Garbage Guys Blackburn’, was paid to remove waste from a full house clearance, but chose to fly tip it off Mowbray Avenue in Blackburn instead—despite being a registered waste carrier.
Well, George has since paid a visit to court. His vehicle that we seized, we can keep that. And on top of that, he’s been fined £3,800.”
The Importance of Proper Waste Disposal Checks
The council used this case to remind residents of their legal responsibility when hiring waste removal services. They advised:
- Always check that waste carriers are registered.
- Ask where the waste will be legally disposed of.
- Get a receipt as proof of proper disposal.
The council warned:
“Remember, you are legally required to make sure that any waste you get rid of is not at risk of being fly-tipped. Always check the carrier is registered, ask where they are taking your waste, and get a receipt. George now has a criminal record.”
Consequences for Fly-Tipping
Fly-tipping is a serious offense, and authorities actively prosecute offenders. Consequences include:
- Heavy fines (as seen in Titterington’s £3,800 penalty).
- Seizure of vehicles used for fly-tipping.
- Criminal records, which can affect future business operations.
This case serves as a warning to both waste carriers and customers. Illegal dumping carries severe consequences, and residents must verify waste removal services to avoid penalties. By following the council’s guidance, homeowners can protect themselves from liability and help keep communities clean and safe.
