Eyemouth car park resurfacing starts following 10-year campaign

After a 10-year campaign, residents of Eyemouth can finally breathe a sigh of relief as work has begun on resurfacing the much-needed Homearms car park. The 60-space car park, owned by Scottish Borders Council (SBC), had been repeatedly patched over the years but was considered a public safety risk due to its deteriorating condition.

A Long-Fought Battle for Repairs

Why Was Resurfacing Needed?

The Homearms car park had suffered from wear and tear for years, leading to uneven surfaces and potholes. Despite temporary fixes, the condition continued to worsen, raising safety concerns for both pedestrians and drivers.

A Decade-Long Campaign

The resurfacing campaign was first launched in 2015 by East Berwickshire councillor James Anderson, alongside Billy Grant, a well-known local figure affectionately called “Billy Tiger”. Sadly, Billy Grant passed away in September 2023 at the age of 84, but his efforts played a crucial role in pushing for the long-overdue repairs.

Councillor’s Commitment Fulfilled

James Anderson, who had made the car park resurfacing one of his campaign promises during the SBC local government elections, expressed his satisfaction with the progress.

“It’s fantastic to see the Homearms car park being resurfaced. Billy and I started this campaign 10 years ago, and now, a decade later, it’s finally getting done,” he said.

What This Means for Eyemouth

With the resurfacing project now underway, the Homearms car park will soon offer a safer and smoother parking experience for residents and visitors. The long-awaited improvements will enhance convenience for shoppers, local businesses, and tourists alike, making Eyemouth more accessible and welcoming.

The resurfacing of Homearms car park is a testament to community persistence and dedicated local leadership. While it took a decade to achieve, the result will provide lasting benefits to Eyemouth’s residents and visitors. This project not only fulfills a campaign promise but also honors the memory of Billy Grant, who tirelessly fought for the town’s betterment.
