Driver who seriously injured woman in A47 crash claimed that something 'flew into his eye'

A 34-year-old man from Peterborough has been banned from driving after a serious crash on the A47 near Wansford left a woman with life-changing injuries.

On October 18, 2023, Zeeshan Yasin, of Scotney Street, Peterborough, was driving along the A47 when he failed to notice stationary traffic ahead. His vehicle crashed into the back of a stationary car, triggering a multi-vehicle collision that resulted in severe injuries for one driver and minor injuries for another.

How the Crash Happened

Erratic Driving Before the Crash

According to witnesses, Yasin was seen drifting across lanes before the crash.

Impact of the Collision

  • As traffic came to a standstill, Yasin failed to brake in time, crashing into a stationary vehicle.
  • The impact forced the car into two other vehicles, before one crashed into a road sign.
  • A woman in the first car suffered a bleed on the brain due to the force of the impact.
  • Another driver, who was pregnant, sustained minor injuries.

Yasin’s Response and Legal Consequences

Initial Denial and Guilty Plea

When questioned by police, Yasin initially denied responsibility, claiming that something had flown into his eye. However, he later changed his account and pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving.

Sentencing at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court

On February 14, 2025, Yasin was:

  • Banned from driving for 12 months
  • Ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work
  • Required to pay legal costs

Police Condemn Yasin’s Careless Driving

PC James Goose, from the BCH Road Policing Team, strongly criticised Yasin’s actions:

“Yasin came up with every excuse in the book as to why the collision wasn’t his fault but later admitted the offence in court. This crash has left a lasting effect on all involved, including psychological trauma and long-term physical injuries for the victims, all because of his careless actions.”

He also emphasised the seriousness of careless driving:

“I hope the court’s sentence, including the driving ban, gives Yasin time to reflect on how a momentary lapse in concentration can devastate innocent lives.”

A Warning on Road Safety

This case highlights the devastating impact of careless driving. A split-second mistake on the road can lead to serious injuries, trauma, and legal consequences.

Drivers are urged to stay alert, avoid distractions, and remain aware of their surroundings to prevent accidents like this from happening in the future.
