Dougie Mac left with 'substantial' repair bill following shop's main window smashed

Organisers at Douglas Macmillan Hospice have expressed their disappointment after one of their charity shop windows was smashed in a senseless act of vandalism. The incident occurred at their Meir store on Uttoxeter Road, near the busy Weston Road roundabout, over the weekend.

Vandalism Leaves Shop with Costly Repairs

Despite the damage, the charity shop remains open, ensuring it continues to generate vital funds for the hospice. However, organisers have stated that repair costs will be substantial.

A Douglas Macmillan Hospice spokesperson shared their frustration over the attack, saying:

“We are disappointed to have to share that our Meir shop has been targeted by an incident of vandalism, which saw one of the shop’s largest windows smashed over the weekend. Thankfully, individuals were not able to gain access to the shop and no items were stolen, but repair costs are likely to be substantial.”

Previous Incidents at Dougie Mac Charity Shops

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a Dougie Mac charity shop has been targeted. In 2023, their Longton store was attacked three times in five months, with raiders attempting to force their way inside.

Following the latest incident, the Meir shop window has been boarded up, and repairs are underway.

Shop Remains Open Despite Damage

Thanks to the dedication of staff and volunteers, the store remains open to customers while repairs are carried out. The hospice has encouraged people to continue donating and shopping in-store to support their crucial work.

How You Can Help

Douglas Macmillan Hospice provides essential care and support for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Community donations and purchases from their charity shops play a vital role in funding their services.

If you would like to support the hospice, you can:

  • Visit and shop at their charity stores.
  • Donate clothing, books, and household items.
  • Volunteer to help run the stores.
  • Make a direct donation to the hospice.

The vandalism of a charity shop that supports such an important cause is deeply disappointing. However, the resilience of the hospice staff and volunteers ensures that the shop remains open and continues its vital fundraising efforts. Community support is more important than ever to help cover repair costs and keep the charity’s essential services running.
