A skilled tailor from Thailand, who arrived in Blackburn as a teenager, is celebrating nearly three decades of running her own successful shop. Chantana Parkinson, who moved to the UK from Bangkok at the age of 18 to work as a nanny, has now spent 28 years providing expert tailoring services in Blackburn’s James Street.
Renowned for her quality craftsmanship and personal service, Chantana has built a strong reputation over the years, offering everything from intricate wedding dress alterations to everyday clothing repairs.
A Journey from Modest Beginnings to Business Success
Chantana’s journey into the tailoring business began in her free time when she would spend her evenings sewing. Recognising a growing interest in her work, she decided to use her savings to establish a small shop in Blackburn, equipped with just a single sewing machine.
Her commitment to her craft, combined with word-of-mouth recommendations and loyal returning customers, helped her business thrive. However, the journey was not without its challenges.
“I got a job sewing in Preston before starting my own business, but I was told I was too slow and had my wage reduced to just 99p an hour,” Chantana recalled. “But I was determined to perfect my skills, and that led me to where I am today.”

Now marking 28 years in the industry, Chantana remains passionate about her work and the joy it brings to her customers.
“Running a small business comes with challenges, but I’ve always believed in hard work and giving my best to every customer,” she said. “The best part of my job is seeing a customer’s face light up when they try something on and it fits perfectly. It’s not just about sewing – it’s about making people feel good.”
Having come to the UK with nothing but her skills, Chantana takes pride in her long-standing business and the support she has received from the Blackburn community.
“Blackburn is a friendly and welcoming place, and I’m proud to live and work here,” she added.
