Go-ahead for plans to construct restaurant in property which housed MP's office

Redcar and Cleveland Council has approved a plan to transform the ground floor of Churchill House, once the constituency office of former Redcar Conservative MP Jacob Young, into a restaurant. The change-of-use application follows Mr. Young’s defeat by Labour’s Anna Turley in the July General Election, after which he vacated the High Street property. The Conservatives had leased the building, and notice was served to the landlord in October following the standard four-month “wash-up” period, during which ex-MPs wind down operations, let go of staff, and settle final expenses.

The planning officer’s report outlined minor external changes, including a new front entrance door, a rear window, and an extract flue, alongside some internal modifications. While the area has limited residential units—mostly above nearby commercial spaces—the report recommended conditions to reduce potential noise disturbances. This includes requiring a soundproofing plan, detailing insulation for walls and floors between adjacent properties, to be submitted and approved by the council.

The report concluded, “The proposal poses no concerns for highway safety, crime prevention, or neighbouring properties. It won’t harm the area’s character or appearance and suits the commercial centre’s vibe.”

Mr. Young, who served one term after his 2019 win, had been a levelling up minister in the last Conservative government. With the restaurant plan now greenlit, the building’s next chapter is set to begin.
