Police appeal for dashcam footage following human remains found on M4

Police are appealing for dashcam footage or information after human remains were discovered on the M4 near Bristol on Saturday. The remains were found between junction 20 (Almondsbury Interchange) and junction 21 (near Awkley), prompting a swift response from Avon and Somerset Police.

Starting at 6:40 p.m., multiple drivers called 999 to report an object on the roadway. Authorities believe the remains belong to a man in his 40s, and his next of kin have been notified. An investigation is underway to determine how the individual ended up on the motorway. Police are urging anyone who drove that stretch of the M4 between 6:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. to share any relevant details or dashcam recordings by calling 101 and referencing case number 5225047292.

The discovery led to significant road closures. The M4 was shut down between junction 20 and junction 22 (Prince of Wales Bridge), affecting the eastbound M48 and sections of the M4. The closures lasted into early Sunday, with National Highways reporting that trapped traffic began moving around midnight. The eastbound M4 reopened by 1:30 a.m., and westbound lanes followed at 3:00 a.m.

Avon and Somerset Police stated, “The M4 is back open after a man’s tragic death overnight. We’ve informed his next of kin and extend our sympathies. If you were on that part of the M4 between 6:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. and have useful information or footage, please contact us at 101 with reference 5225047292.”
