Alarming data uncovered by Bristol Live through a Freedom of Information request has laid bare the extent of speeding across Somerset over the past year, spotlighting the motorway speed cameras nabbing the most offenders. Avon and Somerset Police reported that the fastest speed clocked in their jurisdiction hit 137mph. The M4 emerged as the top hotspot, with nearly 14,000 drivers caught on a single stretch.

The speed camera on the M4 eastbound between Junctions 20 and 19 led the pack, catching 13,812 speeders in 2024. Meanwhile, the M5 between Junctions 16 and 17 snagged over 10,000, and the A303 Ilminster bypass nabbed nearly 3,000, according to Bristol Live.

Here’s the rundown of the top speed cameras in the Avon and Somerset Police area by number of drivers caught:

The data also highlighted regional trends: South Gloucestershire topped the list with 44,131 drivers caught speeding over the year, followed by Bristol with 28,363, and North Somerset with 8,895.
