Residents in Peterborough will see a 4.99% increase in council tax this year as Peterborough City Council finalises its budget for 2025/26. The decision was confirmed at a council meeting on Wednesday, February 19, with 21 councillors voting in favour, 18 against, and 11 abstaining.
The £233 million budget will fund key services, including social care, city regeneration, and support for vulnerable residents. The increase means Band D households will pay £1.59 more per week in council tax.
Where Will the Extra Money Be Spent?
The council outlined its spending priorities, focusing on:
- Elderly and vulnerable care
- Children and family support services
- City growth and regeneration, which will boost job opportunities and economic development
To manage rising demands in children’s social care, adult social care, and homelessness services, the council has also planned £23 million in savings.
Public Consultation Leads to Budget Adjustments
Following public feedback, several budget proposals were adjusted:
- The Lido swimming pool will remain open in spring instead of being mothballed, with plans to generate additional income.
- Planned café closures at the Lido, Flag Fen, Vivacity Premier Fitness, and the Museum and Art Gallery have been put on hold. The council will work with operators to make these cafés financially sustainable.
Council Leaders Respond to Budget Approval
Cllr Mohammed Jamil, Deputy Leader and Finance Cabinet Member, stated:
“This year’s budget-setting process has been one of the most challenging on record, so I am delighted that we have now set a balanced budget for 2025/26. The hard work does not stop here; we now must deliver these savings in full.”
He also acknowledged the role of council staff and cross-party collaboration in shaping the budget, adding that the council will continue working with the Government on a fairer funding model.
Cllr Dennis Jones, Leader of the Council, emphasized the council’s commitment to listening to residents:
“We adapted our draft budget following feedback from the public, and we updated our Corporate Strategy based on the Shaping Our City consultation. We will continue listening and engaging with residents as we strive to achieve our priorities.”
New Corporate Strategy Signed Off
Alongside the budget, councillors also approved an updated Corporate Strategy, which outlines future priorities for the city, including:
- Improving the city centre
- Enhancing local services
- Creating new opportunities for residents
The 4.99% council tax increase reflects the council’s efforts to balance growing financial pressures with maintaining essential services. With a focus on care for the vulnerable, economic growth, and city development, the new budget aims to improve Peterborough’s long-term sustainability while responding to public concerns.
