A twenty-year-old Ingleby Barwick high flyer has become UK's youngest air traffic controller

A 20-year-old from Ingleby Barwick has made history as the youngest qualified air traffic controller in the UK. Josh Brown, who started as an Air Traffic Control Assistant at Teesside Airport at just 18, has now completed his training and secured his civil ATCO (Air Traffic Controller) license.

A Dream Come True for Josh

Josh expressed his excitement and gratitude, saying:

“I’m absolutely over the moon. I’d like to wish a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me since my air traffic journey began. It’s quite a feeling being told you’re the youngest controller in the country. Dreams do come true.”

His journey to qualification involved passing rigorous tests and requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). He also spent six months in Cheltenham completing his Basic and ADI (Aerodrome) training, earning his Student Air Traffic Controller’s license last year.

Despite the challenges, Josh described the experience as incredibly rewarding:

“It’s been tough, but I’ve loved every minute of it. The feeling of having it all finished is amazing. I’ve always loved aviation, and that passion has driven me.”

The Role of Teesside’s Air Traffic Team

The Air Traffic Control team at Teesside Airport manages a diverse range of air traffic, from Draken jets assisting Royal Air Force training to guiding first-time pilots. Josh praised his colleagues for their unwavering support, saying:

“We’re a close-knit team, and I’ve had brilliant support from day one. I cannot thank them all enough.”

Praise from Teesside Airport Leaders

Gayle Douglas, Head of Air Traffic Services, applauded Josh’s achievement:

“We’re incredibly proud to have the youngest licensed ATCO in the country. It’s a testament to the huge amount of work Josh has put in. Qualifying as an Air Traffic Controller is no easy feat, but he has shown he has what it takes. I hope this inspires our young assistants to follow in his footsteps.”

Phil Forster, Managing Director of Teesside Airport, added:

“No airport operates without the dedication of all its teams – from the Fire Station to Ground Crew and the Air Traffic Control tower. Josh has been a rising star, and to have a Teessider as the youngest controller in the country is a proud moment. Massive congratulations to him, and I hope he enjoys many happy years with us.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Josh Brown’s remarkable achievement showcases dedication, hard work, and passion in the high-pressure world of air traffic control. His historic milestone is not just a personal victory but also an inspiration for aspiring aviation professionals.

With his commitment and talent, the young Teessider’s career is just taking off, and he is set to play a vital role in the future of UK aviation.
